چکیده مقاله:

Background and Aim: Oxidative stress plays an important role in the creation and development of atherosclerosis. Recently, astaxanthin cardiovascular protective effects have been reported due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory feature. The aim of this study is to determine the anti-atherosclerotic effects of supplement containing astaxanthin and alpha linolenic acid in patients with mild to moderate coronary artery stenosis. Methods: This controlled double-blind clinical trial study was conducted on 44 patients who referred to Golestan Hospital in Ahwaz in 2017 while suffering from mild to moderate coronary artery stenosis. patients were randomly assigned into two groups. The patients received a supplement containing of astaxanthin 4 mg and alphalinolenic acid 300 mg, one tablet daily and the control group used placebo tablets, for 8 weeks. Results: Daily use of astaxanthin supplementation significantly decreased the level of VCAM1 (P=0.01), E-Selectin (P=0.039), blood pressure (P=0.0001), T-chol (P=0.040) and TG (P=0.023). This supplementation also had a significant effect on the improvement of anthropometric indices including weight,BMI, WHR and body fat percentage (P<0.05). On the other hand, the use of astaxanthin supplementation did not show any significant changes in serum levels of hs-CRP, NO, MDA, leptin, adiponectin and LDL and HDL of lipid profiles in the studied patients (P <0.05).Conclusion: Results of this study demonstrated the positive effects of astaxanthin supplement on reduction of anthropometric indices, blood pressure, T-chol, TG and vascular adhesion factors. Therefore, astaxanthin supplements can be used to treat patients with mild to moderate coronary artery stenosis due to cardiovascular protection, no side effects and availability.
