Structured Packings Hydrodynamics by CFD Analysis

structured packings have been widely used in mass transfer processes such as distillation, absorption and extraction. Prediction of pressure drop and liquid hold up is a key parameter in design of such processes . Structured packed columns can provide larger surface area for gas liquid contacting pressure drop and higher load capacity compared to either random packed and/ or trayed columns. in this work dry and irrigated pressure drop as well as liquid holdup of gempak 2A structured packing have been predicted by CFD analysis. comparison of the predicted with experimental results and SRP model show good consistency . the minimum and maximum values of dry irrigated pressure drop and liquid hold up are equal to 8.76 pa/m,318.14 pa/m, 16.95pa/m , 598.3pa/m and 0.034, 0.053 , respectively . the mean absolute relative error MARE between CFD prediction, and experimental data for dry pressure drop, irrigated pressure drop and liquid holdup are about 15%,14%,17%,respectively.
