This paper describes the numerical simulation of unidirectional elasto-plastic response of compressible solids under hypervelocity impact loads. The mass, momentum, and energy equations are solved along with evolution equations for deviatoric stresses. These equations are cast in Eulerian conservation law form and the material interfaces are tracked via the level set technique. Pressure is obtained by an equation state (EOS). The governing equations are split into two subproblems and solved sequentially in time. First, a CWENO shock-capturing method that was developed for gas dynamics is used to evolve conserved variables in time. Then a fifth-order Godunov-type central scheme is used to solve the Hamilton–Jacobi (HJ) equation of Level-sets to determine the new interface position. A new boundary condition based on pressure at the contact point of impactor and the rigid surface is applied at the material surface. At the end, the proposed method is used to simulate the reflection of a deforming body from a rigid surface. Results of calculations show good agreement with analytical solutions.
