چکیده مقاله:

Vehicle side crash is a critical crash event where the vehicle is impacted by a movable car or vehicle may hit a tree or pole. According to statistics, side crashes account for about a quarter of passenger vehicle occupant deaths in the United States. Minimizing theintrusion into the occupant space in side crashes is challenging because the sides of vehicles have relatively little space to absorb energy and shield occupants, unlike the fronts and rears, which have substantial crumple zones. In side collisions, B-Pillar and rockerplay an important role in resisting the load due to the crash. The objective is to study the functional performance and potential mass reduction in the vehicle B-Pillar or rocker by attaching different shapes of metal reinforcements. To investigate the crashworthinesseffect of reinforcement attachments, vehicle B-Pillar is first considered as a hat shape structure. Then, seven types of metal reinforcements are attached to the hat shape structure and numerically tested under lateral impact loading test using LS-DYNA. Finally, the best energy absorbing column design is chosen based on SEA parameter, intrusion and bending moment and the results are compared to the baseline model with the standard reinforcement.
