چکیده مقاله:

Down-hole drill string buckling is an important issue in petroleum engineering. Unlike the classical Euler buckling mode of a rod, various external factors–such as constraint of a wellbore, drill string weight, torque, friction, etc.–make the drill string buckling behavior more complex. In this study, the nonlinear differential equations governing the equilibrium state of a drill string confined in an inclined wellbore were presented. Then, a generalized differential quadrature rule (GDQR) in conjunction with an iterative Newton-Raphson method was established to analyze the nonlinear buckling of the drill string. The method was verified with available results taken from the literature. The post-buckling configuration development of the drill string obtained from the proposed method was found to be in a good agreement with field observations, namely, that the deformation emerges from the low side of the wellbore and then grows laterally on the well wall, even can transmit to helical mode if higher loads applied. It was demonstrated that either lateral (sinusoidal) or helical buckling may occur under a given load depending on the initial disturbance. Furthermore, the deformation was no longer symmetric about the middle portion of the drill string due to the effect of its own weight. The numerical results confirmed the efficiency and accuracy of the GDQR in dealing with drill string buckling problems.
