Whether temporary or permanent, an ostomy may be created for such indications as cancer. Preoperative preparation, Postoperative care and Ostomy appliances are subjects that nurses should pay attention. Keeping the peristomal skin intact proves to be a challenge for the patients, their caregivers, and the health care teams that work with them. Complications range from mild irritation to full thickness ulcerations leading to pain, anxiety, and in some cases significant social isolation related to the pouching system leaks. They are some of the most common postoperative complications and usually occur within the first two weeks of the creation of the stoma. Many skin complications arise from insecure, sensitizing or damaging medical adhesive that good educational system could be helpful to prevent them. Peristomal skin complications can also present as late complications, months or even years after the initial surgery. These are such as Papular Overgranulation, Infection, Allergic Contact Dermatitis, Mechanical Trauma and Pressure Ulcer/Injury. In order to avoid these issues, it is best to use a medical adhesive that is safe, gentle, hypoallergenic, waterproof and secure.
