چکیده مقاله:

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are one of the most advanced nanovectors for highly efficient delivery of drugs and biomolecules owing to their large surface besides including unique opticaland electrical properties. They can be conjugated noncovalently or covalently with drugs, biomolecules andnanoparticles towards the development of a new-generation delivery systems for drugs and biomolecules. Their very large surface area, allows multi-conjugation ofvarious molecules on the side walls. The hydrophobicity of CNT limits their application in biology. It is highly desirable to modify CNT with different functional groups and incorporate other nanomaterials to create new hybrid architectures to extend and optimize CNTs applications inthese fields. Although acid treated CNTs are water-soluble, the carbonyl (C=O), carboxyl (–COOH), and/or hydroxyl (–OH) groups ontheir surfaces might lead to higher toxicity. Thus, the functionalization of CNT with biopolymers promises to be one of the most successful methods to improve the hydrophilicityof CNT. These biopolymers can bring a hydrophilic surface for CNT to obtain covalent, absorptive, or ionic bindings with bioactive molecules. Chitosan (CS), a natural biopolymer, has found wide applications in a variety of areas, including biomedicine andpharmaceutical, due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, low toxicity, characteristic, and anti-infection activity. CS can be used as a modifier because it has abundant –NH2 and –OH functional groups which can react with bioactive molecules.
