Experimental Study on Draw-ability of filament yarns produced From Recycled PET and Bottle Grade PET

Polymers are used in a wide range of applications. One of the most family types of plastic packaging found in American household is made from a plastic is Poly (EthyleneTerephthalate) (PET) [1]. The accumulation of this nonbiodegradable waste has led to serious ecology problems. However, unlike other plastic waste, PET can be recycled into superior and useful end products [2]. Our previous [3] work has demonstrated the producing filament yarns from used PETbottle and the production was successfully carried out. The aim of this work is to investigate processing behavior offilament yarn from recycled PET(R-PET) and bottle grade PET (BG-PET) at the various draw-ratios and compare with fiber grade PET as a control. It should be pointed out that PET chips or flakes have to be dried before extrusion; otherwise the molecular weight will be reduced from ½ to ⅓ of initial molecular weight [4].
