InsituPolymerization of Laurolactam towards Polyamide 12

The insitu ring opening anionic polymerization was successfully performed via the melt blending of laurolactam as monomer towards polyamide 12 (PA12). Sodium caprolactam(NaCL) and toluene diisocyanate (TDI) were introduced to the system as the catalyst and activator, respectively. The polymerization was taken place in an internal mixer and the polymer characteristics were determined. The residual monomer was removed using the solvent extraction method and determined through TGA. Differential scanning calorimetric (DSC), Attenuated total reflectance (ATR) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) were applied in order to specify the physical properties of polymer and confirm the PA12 formation.
