In recent years, hazardous waste disposal has become a leading environmental issue. Phenols are common organic pollutants because of their toxicity even at low concentrations [1]. Environmental regulations require that phenol-containing wastewater be treated before discharge into the aquatic environment. There are several methods for removal of phenols from wastewater streams such as solvent extraction, adsorption, thermal/chemical/biological oxidation, membrane separation and biodegradation methods. A process integration of halogenation and oxidation is proposed to achieve the recovery and removal of phenolic compounds from high strength phenolic wastewater, which original COD is 70,600 mg/L. The removal of phenols from wastewater has been investigated under various operational conditions using hydrophobic hollow fiber membrane contactors. Experimental overall mass transfer coefficients were obtained in both handmade and Liqui-Cel modules. This change in wetting patterns resulted in significant differences in mass transfer and solute recovery which can be accounted for by adjusting the position of the interface within the membrane fiber. Studies on feasibility analysis show that the process integration is a simple, inexpensive and feasible step for the high strength phenolic wastewater treatment.
