Stem cells and cell therapy in dentistry

IntroductionTooth and Oral tissues have multiple stem cells. These include bone marrow, dental pulp, periodontal ligament, dental follicle, dental germ, oral epithelium, gingiva, salivary glands and the like.ObjectivesThis article explains the types of stem cells present in the mouth and teeth, and their applications, the advantages, and disadvantages of using them in the treatment.MethodsThe search used the combined search terms Stem cells, tooth and dental/oral*/ maxillofacial in the PubMed, Embase, and google scholar for databases in May 2018.ResultsThe easy access to these resources and the ability of these stem cells in tissue regeneration treatments have made them important. In dentistry, these cells can be used in many ways to help root formation, endodontics and pulp tissue regeneration, periodontal regeneration, transplantation, and tissue engineering.ConclusionMore studies are needed to use these cells in the treatment of autologous oral and dental tissue regeneration
