Signs and symptoms of sick-building syndrome among office workers of Bandar Abbas Municipality

The health of the building, quality of materials and environmental standards affecting its implementationare important elements in the design and construction of buildings. Office buildings should be based onenvironmental indicators according to the type and volume of activities that take place in them.Accordingly, the aim of this study is to identify the signs and symptoms of sick-building syndromeamong office workers of Bandar Abbas (in Iran) Municipality. The study was causal-comparative. Thestatistical population of the study was all employees in the headquarters of the Municipality of BandarAbbas in 2014. The sample was composed of 40 people who were selected in a purposeful way(matching). The sample was divided into two groups of appropriateness of symptoms and the diagnosisof inappropriateness of symptoms according to the volume of signs. A researcher-made questionnairewas used in order to gather the required information which included the evaluation of staff andsymptoms of sick-building syndrome in them. Independent t-test was used to analyze the data and testthe hypotheses. The results showed that the presence at work (p = 0.0001), heating and air conditioning(p= 0.001), lightening (p=0.02), the workplace smell (p=0.01) and satisfaction of colleagues (p=0.009)have a significant impact on sick-building syndrome and only satisfaction with the workplace (p=0.8)does not have a significant impact on the staff’s sick-building. According to the results of this study,physical signs and indications of the building affect the sick-buildings of employees.
