COMPARISON OF SENSATION SEEKING BETWEEN MEDICAL STUDENTS WITH AND WITHOUT HISTORY OF DRUG ABUSE AND SMOKING IN ZAHEDAN

Background and Aim : Sensation seeking as psychologic variables has special effect in Drug abuse and addiction. The aim of this study was to comparison of sensation seeking between Medical students with and without history of Drug abuse and Smoking.Methods : This is a descriptive-analytical cross sectional study in 164 medical students with or without history of Drug abuse and Smoking in Zahedan medical university at 2007. Sample subjects were chosen by Cluster sampling . Information about sensation seeking were collected by standard Zuckerman s questionnaire . also Demoghraphic data and information about history of Drug abuse and Smoking were completed by questionnaire. then findings and means of Zuckerman s sensation seeking scale (SSS) analyzed with using descriptive statistics and T test . Results : Out of164 medical students, 65% were femal . The mean age of the subjects was 21.73±2.88. In medical students with history of Drug abuse mean of SSS was 55.41 ± 6.35 and in medical students without history of Drug abuse mean of SSS was 56.14 ± 5.31. Also in Smoking medical students mean of SSS was 55.87 ±6.58 and in non-Smoking medical students mean of SSS was 55.98 ±5.11. Of course, there were no significant association between of sensation seeking, Drug abuse and smoking.Conclusion : In results of this study, there were no significant association between pattern of sensation seeking, Drug abuse and smoking. Because of this controversy with result of other studies, for more evaluation suggested more quantitative & comprehensive research by evaluation of specific effective factors to sensation seeking
