The Effect of Rose Oil Essence on the Sexual Function of Women

Introduction: Healthy sexual function plays an important role in improving the health and quality of life of women Despite the increasing availability of effective medical treatments, herbal remedies are still a popular and affordable alternative to medicine. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of oil rose on sexual function in women.Methods: This study is a triple blind clinical trial. 80 women who referred to the traditional medical centers of Tehran and had criteria for entering the study and did not have moderate and severe depression were randomly assigned to control group (n=40) and test group (n=40). The data collection tool included demographic information form, Beck Depression Inventory and the Female Sexual Function Index questionnaire. Participants in the intervention group used two soft capsules containing 15 mg of Oral Essential Oil (standardized on the basis of at least 5.7 mg of Citronellal in each soft capsule) for 8 weeks each day. Individuals in the control group also used capsules containing sunflower oil (placebo) in the same way. The sexual function of the subjects before and after the study (week 8) was evaluated. 3 people were excluded from the intervention group and 5 from control group. Data were analyzed using SPSS-16 software, Fisher s, Chi-square, independent T-test and Friedman statistical tests. P <0.05 was considered significant.Results: Based on the findings, the mean age of the subjects in the intervention group was 35.6 ± 91.97 and in control group 37.9 ± 14.26 and most of them were highly educated. The results of the study showed that the mean scores of female sexual function was significantly increased two months after the intervention in the experimental group (26.7 ± 5.13), compared with the scores before the intervention (20.90 ± 3.34) (P <0.001), But the mean scores in the control group were not significant (P= 0.320). A comparison of mean score of female sexual function index between intervention and control groups at the end of the study was statistically significant (P <0.001).Conclusion: The findings of this study showed that the daily consumption of two capsules of 15 mg of Rose Oil, improves sexual function in women. Therefore, given the acceptance of the use of herbal remedies in the community, this oral essential oil can be prescribed as an affordable, inexpensive and uncomplicated treatment for improving female sexual function.
