چکیده مقاله:

Background: Endometriosis disease is sometimes presented with gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms and misdiagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome for a period before a correct diagnosis is made by the clinician. The aims of this study were to assay the prevalence of GI symptoms in women with endometriosis diagnosis and association with localization of endometriosis lesions and colonoscopy findings.Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was done in the Yas hospital. All women with endometriosis diagnosis whom referred to the Department of Gynecology were invited to participate in this study. All women completed a check list including gastrointestinal symptoms, followed by assessment and examination by a gastroenterologist. Data of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and colonoscopy were recorded. Results: Among 150 cases of endometriosis was investigated, 88.7% (n=133) reported significantly abdominal pain, constipation, bloating and flatulence, and sensation of incomplete evacuation. 11.3% (n=17) patients had no GI symptoms. Mean age of patients was 33.9 year. The most common GI symptom was flatulence in 50 % of patients. There wasn’t any association between GI symptoms and deep localization of endometriosis lesions in MRI. Colonoscopy was done on 58 patients and significant pathology was just seen in 11 patients. Conclusion: In this study, GI symptoms were reported in 88.7% of women with endometriosis diagnosis. There was no association between symptoms and lesion localization.
