A review of interventions for improving mental health in breast cancer women

Introduction: Individuals with cancer are affected by moderate to severe symptoms of emotional problems which reduced psychological well-being. Counseling helps patients for adaption to their problems. Therefore, this review aimed to investigate interventions that improve mental health in women with breast cancer.Methods: A narrative literature review was conducted. Electronic databases, including Google Scholar, Web of Science, Science Direct, Scopus, and PubMed, including Medline, as well as Persian databases like Scientific information database and Iran Medex were searched to retrieve articles published from 2007 to 2017 by using the keywords Counseling, Psychotherapy, Cognitive Therapy, Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive behavioral therapy and Cancer, a total of 140 studies that was related to the topic were extracted. After Title and abstract screening, 56 articles and then in full text screening, 37 articles were removed. Finally, 47 articles (10 Persian articles and 37 English articles) used for writing this review.Results: Counseling interventions that improving mental health in women with breast cancer were classified in 10 categories and 25 sub-categories: 1- Psychiatric intervention such as group psychotherapy, based on acceptance and commitment, awareness and hope, 2- Individual and group cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) Plus hypnosis Intervention, relaxation and physical training, 3- Individual or group-based Internet based therapy, 4- Spiritual therapy, 5- Narrative therapy, 6- Massage therapy, 7- Psycho education, 8- Telephone counseling for improving interpersonal and psychosocial relationships, 9- Psycho-Motor counseling, 10- Midwifery-Based Counseling Support Program and Peer Counseling.Conclusion: The results showed that counseling and supportive interventions have been effective in improving mental health and quality of life of women with breast cancer. Therefore, it is recommended that counseling interventions be considered as a part of management of these patients.
