The effect of explicit strategies-based instruction on the speaking skill of Iranian EFL learners

Teaching speaking skill has been the concern of research circles for a long time. the influence of different factor like motivation level, methods and materials used in the classroom , level of proficiency , and atmosphere of the setting where the learners are taught and the amount of chances they have for practicing the target language has been deeply studied. In this study, the attempt has been made to investigate the effect of explicit strategy-based instruction on speaking skill. To this end, within an experimental study, the experimental group received the treatment of explicit strategies-based instruction. Through the comparison of the pre-test and post-test the effect of the treatment was examined. The interpretation of the data suggested that the used of explicit strategy-based instruction proved to be effective for Iranian EFL learners’ speaking proficiency. In other words, the more strategy-based leaning, the better the learners’ speaking performance would be. The results of this study can inform teaching other skills. The main implication of this study was to pave the way for the explicit strategy-based instruction of the other three skills. The other implications of the study coupled with suggestions for further research are provided in the related sections.
