RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DIABETES MELLITUS AND THE SEMEN QUALITY IN PATIENT WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS

Background and Aim : Diabetes mellitus (DM) 2 is a metabolic disorder which leads to many systemic dysfunctions and male infertility.The prevalence of infertility in type 2 DM men was is 35.1% .previous study showed that prevalence of primary (16%) and secondary (19.1%) infertility is significantly higher in patients with diabetes compared with patients without diabetes.The aim of this study was to evaluate whether affect of diabetes mellitus on sperm parameters.Methods : This study involved total of 47 patients with DM2 with infertility history > 12 months, and 55 healthy men fertile subjects who referred to infertility treatment center of besat hospital .kurdistan ,sanandaj. Semen analysis of patients were evaluated according to the world health organization guidelines of 2010. Sperm patameters at least 200 sperm per sample were evaluated.Results : The current study indicated there were no significant differences in seminal fluid volume in patients with DM2 as compared healthy men (p > 0.05). Sperm parameters were significantly differences in the two groups of patients. Patients with DM2 showed a statistically significant decrease in sperm concentration, Progressive motility , morphology as compared to healthy men (P<0. 05). Moreover, patients with DM2 showed a significant decrease of sperm vitality as compared to controls (p < 0.05).Conclusion : The present study suggest that DM2 alters the sperm parameters and adverse effects on semen quality , thus reducing male fertility
