چکیده مقاله:

Background & Aim: Long-term memory is divided into semantic and episodic memory. Semantic memory is a structured mental lexicon, consists of words, meanings and their relations that are not time and/or place-dependent. The dysfunction of this memory in individuals with acquired brain injury would adversely impact their lives. Therefore, the aim of this review article was to evaluate the semantic memory performance in MS patients.Materials & Methods: An online search of databases like Google Scholar, Willey Online Library, Springer, Science Direct, Pubmed, and Pubmed Central using keywords semantic, semantic memory and Multiple Sclerosis was performed. After scanning the abstract, we selected nine studies meeting the criteria for this review. Results: The first and last literature search were done in 1984 and 2011, respectively. MS patients in literature search were middle-aged adults (mean=36.5-51 yrs), diagnosed mostly with relapsing-remitting type of MS, had a mean disease duration of less than 10 to 16 years, and their Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) scores ranged from 0 to 7. The most common tests used in these articles were Boston Naming Test and Verbal Fluency Test. Furthermore, most of these studies focused on verbal semantic memory function, except one research that studied both verbal and nonverbal semantic memory performance in MS patients. Conclusion: The lack of consistency in the results of these nine studies highlights the importance of focusing on semantic memory performance in MS patients. Therefore, regarding the assessment of semantic memory function might shed some lights on providing appropriate rehabilitation programs for MS patients.
