چکیده مقاله:

Background and objective: Blood transfusion is an important part of patient management. Indications for blood use must be clear in the mind of ordering clinicians, to avoid its misuse and also to avoid unnecessary exposure of the patient to donor blood antigens, adverse reactions and transfusion transmissible diseases. The aim of this study was to assess the rates of pack cell transfusion in different wards of Birjand city Vali-e-asr Hospital, Birjand, Iran. Materials and Method: In this descriptive and cross-sectional study, the number of red blood cell (RBC) units transfused at 9 wards of Birjand city Vali-e-asr Hospital from October 2015 to September 2016were reviewed in 4 age groups including: 0-5 years, 5-20 years, 20-60 years and > 60 years. Findings: During the period of study, the total of 3413 units of packed cell were transfused. Patients who were 20-60 years old received most of the red blood cell units (1495 units; 43.8%) while children at the ages of 0-5 years received the least amount (268 units; 7.85%). Among adult patients, female received more red blood cell units than male (1853 vs 1560). According to the months, the highest and lowest number of RBC units were transfused in August (335 units; 981%) and June (223; 6.53%), respectively. Conclusions: This study revealed that adult patients especially females are at the higher risk of receiving blood units. However; as the number of RBC units transfused differed based on the hospital ward, it is necessary to perform this study on with regarding the different wards. These results provide basic data on RBC transfusions required for future studies. Incorporating these data could help health care professionals in our hospital to have new insight about the rates of blood transfusion which will increase patient safety and reduce costs
