The tissue expression of prohibitin-i and it s relationship with prognostic factors in breast cancer

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide. Prohibitin-I, a homologous protein which has been introduced for the first time as the suppressor gene of amplification, is shownto have a fundamental role in the cell cycle and is able to inhibit DNA transcription in many cell types. Therefore its role in different types of malignancies is of interest. This study aimed to examine therelationship between the tissue distribution of PHB-I and prognostic factors of breast cancer. Paraffin embedded tissue specimens from 33 patients diagnosed with breast cancer at Omid Hospital, Mashhad,Iran, were studied. To perform immunohistochemistry, a commercial monoclonal antibody was used. The relationship between PHB-I tissue expression with disease stage, tumor grade and size, andhormone receptor status including estrogen (ER) and progesterone receptors (PR), were evaluated. Immunohistochemical study showed a significant increase in PHB-I tissue expression with an increasein tumor grade (P=0.057) and expression of the hormone receptors; ER (P=0.009) and PR (P=0.004). The Age of patients and other prognostic factors including Her-2 receptor status and disease stage didnot statistically correlate with PHB1 expression. We observed an increased expression of PHB-I in the breast cancer tumors of our patients compared to the anatomically healthy margin. It s statisticallysignificant relationship with some prognostic factors such as disease grade and expression of ER and PR might indicate the PHB-I potential application for diagnostic and patient management purposes
