Non pharmacological interventions for promotion of mental health in women with cancer: a narrative review

Diagnosis of cancer is a stressful event that can lead to various types of psychological symptoms with different severity. The psychological reaction to cancer diagnosis and its complications have a negative impact on all aspects of patients life. Given the important effect of mental health in these patients, the aim of this study was to determine the non-pharmacological interventions for promotion of mental health in women with cancer. In this narrative review study, researchers conducted their computer search in databases such as Google Scholar and more specifically databases like PubMed, MEDLINE, ProQuest, web of science, Science direct and Scopus. The keywords used were psychological interventions, psychosocial interventions, cancer, mental health, psychiatric disorders and quality of life. Articles from 1980 to 2017 were selected. Overall 65 articles have been searched. Researchers reviewed the summary of all articles searched and ultimately they applied 47 full text to compile thisreview. Results regarding non pharmacological interventions for promotion of mental health were classified in 4 main categories. Psychological interventions (supportive therapy, group counseling with meaning therapy approach, cognitive behavioral psychotherapy, coping styles improvement and psycho-educational interventions), spirituality interventions (religion therapy, praying, logotherapy andhope therapy), social interventions (family and social support), individual interventions (relaxation, yoga, other exercise and music therapy). Reviewing studies results showed that these interventions were the most effective strategies in promotion of mental health. Given the important role of mental health in quality of life of patients with cancer, notice to mental status of these patients as an important part of their treatment process is required
