چکیده مقاله:

Over the last century, lung cancer from the rarest diseases became by far the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women. Also frequency of allergic diseases has increased especially in high- developed countries. In recent years, many studies have suggested an association between history of allergic diseases and lung cancer development, however most of the findings are inconsistent andcontroversial. In this paper we investigate possible linking mechanisms then we discuss epidemiological studies that support or contradict each mechanism.Several linking pathways can be suggested. There are two main hypotheses. The first one states that allergies are accompanied by inflammatory reactions which lead to an optimal environment for carcinogenesis. this can explain a positive association. In contrast, immunosurveillance hypothesis suggests that hyper activation of immune system in allergic person may exert an extra protection against cancer development. Confirming this idea, an experimental model of coexistence of both allergic pulmonary inflammation and cancer demonstrated that tumor growth significantly decreased in an allergy inflammation environment. That occurred viathe over expression of TGF-β, which was able to contain and kill tumor cells through apoptosis and decreased cell proliferation. In addition, we discussed roles of other agents involved in allergy like, IgE, Th2 and mast cells which contribute in cancer development too, so they can function as linking bridges of the two diseases. Also we hypothesize that allergies correlated with lungs can boost severity ofrespiratory diseases which themselves may increase risk of lung cancer. Although these hypothesis can explain some controversies in epidemiological studies, due to complex interactions exact mechanisms are not yet elucidated and need further investigations. We suggest that the same relationship between all types of allergies and lung cancers cannot be offered. Indeed the interactions of different mechanisms in variety of allergies and conditions will determine the exact relationship.
