Relationships between spiritual well-being and Depression in burn patients: a cross-sectional study

Background: Depression is the fourth leading cause of community disability in the world and it has high prevalence among burn patient. Since spirituality is positively associated to physical and mental health, this study aimed to determine the relationship of spiritual well-being and depression among burn patient.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on burn patients of Iran Universities of Medical Sciences. Using a two-stage sampling method, 290 burn patients were randomly selected. Data were collected by Beck’s Depression questionnaire, and Paloutzian and Ellison’s spiritual wellbeing questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 21. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, independent samples t-test and ANOVA were used.Results: Of the 290 patients, 271 patients (139 women and 132 men) were entered into the analysis. The mean total score on the spiritual well-being of patients was 53.62 ± 8.09. The mean depression score of the patients was 38.40 ± 7.93. Overall, 19.02% of the patients had mild depression, 73.6% had a moderate spiritual well-being. Pearson correlation coefficient showed a significant and inverse relationship between the spiritual health and depression intensity (r =- 0.522 p < 0.0001).Conclusion: according to the study, improve dimension of spiritual health as the influential factor in reducing the depression of burn patients and provide care based on culture are necessary.
