Role of Geology on Syn and Post-dam Construction Problems in Khuzestan Province, Iran

Fast and exceedingly growth of small hydro power plant due to the daily increase of water demand necessitate finding new locations for construction of such civil structures. In this regard conducting appropriate and correct geological studies willaffect extensively time duration of construction. The study and review of differentreports on dam construction in addition to numerous field visits to proposed dam sites in Khuzestan Province, south west of Iran show that main limitations and problemsfaced during various procedures can be categorized in two subjects: lithologicallimitations and structural control. Variability of stratigraphic sequences and occurrence of different easily deformable Formations and together with apparentlysimple geologic structures especially those obscured by overlying features or structures highly affect the construction procedure. Unfortunately, inappropriatereconnaissance and absence of detailed or reliable seismic or structural profiles and lack of updated geological maps intensify the problem
