Design and operation of a fiber optic thermal sensor using a bimetal strip

Design and operation of a fiber optic thermal sensor employing a bimetal strip is reported.The light intensity modulation is based on reaction of a bimetal strip to temperature changes.Using a light emitting diode as source,a photodiode as receiver and a pair of 1000 microns (w/coating)fiber optic cables,temperature resolution of the order of 1 degree of celsius with a sensitivity of about 0.2 millivolt per degree of celsius for a dynamic range of 40 degree of celsius has been measured. In Addition, a theoretical model for transmission function has been proposed and experimental results show a good agreement with it.Both theory and experiment predict a reachable dynamic range of 170 degree of celsius. This simple and cost effective feature can be set in a capsule and used for remote temperature sensing.
