The Role of Urban corporation in Crisis and Disaster Management

The rapid rate of urbanization has increased pressure on the infrastructure recourses of the urban bodies. This has led to problems like slums, traffic congestion, pollution as well as health and sanitation issues. The urban bodies of today are planning for smart cities on one hand and on the other hand are trying to replace and rehabilitate slums and slum dwellers. Many times this unplanned growth of cities gives rise to many problems.There has been an increasing concern on part of the urban planning authorities to deal with the problems created by rapid unorganized urbanization and the migration of people from villages to cities in search of job and better living conditions. On the other hand there has been an increase in the occurrence of crisis as well as disasters both natural and manmade, which are posing a threat to the safety and security to the lives and property of its citizens.The current paper focuses on the various crisis and disasters which are faced by the urban bodies and tries to find out the role urban bodies should play in order to mitigate the risk of these crisis and how it can act in order to minimize the impact of such occurrence as well as the planning, monitoring, implementation of policies and procedures so that such crisis can be handled effectively.
