Cigarette butt leaches heavy metals into water

The key purpose of this paper was to measure the concentration of Pb, Cd, As, Cr and Ni released into water from cigarette butt. Ten cigarette butts were soaked into 100 milliliters of distilled water for 10 days. Concentrations of heavy metals in the butt leachate samples were measured by ICP-OES. All heavy metals of interest were detected in the samples. The metal content in the cigarette butt leachate was laid in the following order; As > Pb > Cr > Ni > Cd. Based on this study, cigarette butt plays an important role in the environmental pollution and its importance should be paid attention in terms of heavy metals.
