Consanguinity is a marriage between relatives who at least share one common recognizable ancestor. This kindof marriage increases infant mortality rate as well as the risk of autosomal recessive and genetic disorders. Thepurpose of this study is to investigate the rate of inbreeding levels 3 and 4 in infertile couples and their parentsand also the frequency of consanguinity in recurrent spontaneous abortions.In this cross-sectional study, 396 infertile couples who were admitted to Yazd Infertility Center from October2008 until April 2009, in addition to 100 cases of couples with recurrent spontaneous abortions wereinvestigated. Required data was collected using a questionnaire which asked about man and woman s age,infertility causes in each, the couples family relationship, family relationship of man s parents, and familyrelationship of woman s parents.According to the results, the frequency of male infertility causes is higher than other causes and the mostprevalent one is Astenospermia+trutospermia. In infertile couples with male causes the frequency of couples family relationship is higher. On the other hand, the frequency of infertile couples family relationship withrecurrent spontaneous abortions was estimated 40%.The results showed that consanguinity plays a serious role in autosomal recessive and genetic disorders. Infantmortality rate as well as the probability of recurrent spontaneous abortions in infants of these types of marriagesis higher than non-consanguineous marriages. Finally, there is no meaningful relationship between infertilitycauses and the couples family relationship.
