چکیده مقاله:

Introduction: Physical activity and proper diet are two important components in maintaining a healthy weight. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a child-centered physical activity program and a parent-centered diet modification on weight of overweight children. Methods: This study was a single blind randomized controlled trial on 70 overweight children aged 5-10 years in Tehran. The study participants were randomly divided into three groups (parent-centered diet group, childcentered physical activity group and a combination of both groups). Weight and height of children were measured at the first visit and BMI for Age Z-score (BAZ) was calculated by using Anthroplus software. Eight sessions of face-to-face educational interventions were performed weekly for all three groups and then two monthly phone calls to follow up. Results: Body mass index score for age decreased in all three groups after the end of the intervention. But in the diet group (95% CI = -0.48_ 0.21 OR = -0.38) and the diet and physical activity group (95% CI = -0.36_ -0.23 OR = -0.31), BAZ for age decreased significantly more than the physical activity group (95% CI = -0.28_ 0.07 OR= -0.16). (P = 0.01) Conclusion: Relative body weight decreased over 4 months, and the child-centered physical activity and parent-centered diet resulted in greater weight loss. The greatest effect was achieved when the diet was modified with parental focus.
