Comparing the state of iodine sufficiency in school 8-10 year old children of southern districts of khouzestan province in 2017-2018

Introduction: A lack of iodine and disorders resulting from it as a major health program is known in iran.iodine deficiency prevention and control program has been carried out since 1989 in iran with the goal of monitoring the the country – wide program of iodine deficiency control through the comparison of iodine deficiency in school children 8-10 years during 2017-2018. Methods: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, through random sampling,240 school children 8-10 years old covered by the faculty of Abadan (Abadan-Khorramshahr –Shadegan) were selected and checked for the status of iodine sufficiency based onurinary iodine.The were than graded according to WHO classification: urine iodine more than 10ug/dl as the situation without a deficiency of iodine, 5-10ug/dl,mild deficiency and 2-5ug/dl moderate deficiency, and less than 2ug/dl as a severe shortage. Results: The findings showed that the number of students of iodine sufficiency has increased over the years 2017-2018, the mean level of urinary iodine was13-26.percentage of students with mild to severe iodine deficiency was 16% in 2017, 13% in 2018. Conclusion: The adequacy of urinary iodine in students indicates the success of country-wide program of iodine deficiency control.
