DETERMINING AND CORRELATING OF CONTINUOUS PHASE SHERWOOD NUMBER IN A RANDOMLY PACKED EXTRACTION COLUMN

in this paper , continuous phase Sherwood Number has been correlated in a packed extraction column . Two different systems , toluene-acetic acid - water and normal butanol - acetic acid - water . Were used with big and low interfacial tension , respectively. The results show that the flow rates of phases , distribution of phases , and the type of systems have a great effect on mass transfer . Also , the empirical values of sherwood number were calculated for continuous phase and a practical correlation was derived . It was observed that the correlation has %AARD lower than 7 for both systems , which shows a good agreement between experimental data and the correlation.
