Investigation of the performance of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell in different compositions of fuel with CFD method

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) as an important type of fuel cells convert chemical energy of the fuel to the electrical energy through electrochemical reactions. Great effort is being made in the development and improvement of SOFC performance. In doing so, in this study, a three dimensional model was developed to investigate the performance of solid oxide fuel cell fueled by different composition ratios CO2 and H2O with CFD method. The model was developed based on a set of reactions including, methane steam reforming (MSR), water gas shift reaction (WGSR), dry methane reforming (DMR) and electrochemical reactions. The model was validated with experimental data and a good agreement was observed. We use finite element method (FEM) and solving equations with COMSOL Multiphysics® 5.3a. We studied H2O to CH4, CO2 to CH4 and CO2 to H2O ratios. The power density is decreasing with increasing H2O to CH4 ratio and slightly decreasing with increasing CO2 to CH4 ratio. This can also be used as the base model for the study of carbon deposition in SOFCs in future.
