چکیده مقاله:

After the industrial revolution and unfavorable increment in the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, researchers are always looking for some methods to control and reduce the concentration of this greenhouse gas. Capture and storage of carbon dioxide is the achievement of these researches as one of the new technologies for salvaging the natural environment. For this purpose, after a relatively complete survey and choosing a suitable reservoir, the design of the CO2 injection into the formation have to be done at the reservoir operating conditions. Integrity of the cap rock as a sealing layer is one of the most important factors in this technique and breakthrough pressure is an essential parameter in evaluating the integrity of the cap rock and the possible leakage of the CO2.This project is the first experimental work in Iran, in order to investigate the cap rock integrity for carbon dioxide sequestration and its purpose is measuring breakthrough pressure and studying the cap rock leakage. At the first step, the rock samples (anhydrite, marl and shale cores of Gachsaran, Gurpi and Kazhdumi formations in Iran) were prepared. After brine saturating of the samples, absolute permeability and breakthrough pressure (using the step by step (standard) approach) were measured and finally for a better understanding of the problem state, the results of the carbon dioxide were compared to nitrogen. In these CO2 injection tests, the maximum breakthrough pressure was 30 MPa for anhydrite saturated core of Gachsaran and the minimum recorded pressure was 1.5 MPa for Shale unsaturated core of Gurpi formation.
