The Facilitating Factors of Compassionate Nursing Care from Nurses Perspective of Neurology

Hospitalization in neurology wards is commonly associated with threatening experiences for patients and their family members. Through using compassion in care, nurses can promote satisfaction and increase patients hope for recovery. The aim of this study was to examine the facilitating factors of compassionate care from nurses point of view in neurology wards. This was a qualitative exploratory study. Data were analyzed using the conventional content analysis method. Nurses in neurology wards of the educational hospitals in Shiraz, Iran were selected from February 2016 to December 2017 using a purposeful sampling method (n=10). In-depth and semi-structured interviews were used for data collection. The study was approved by the University’s Ethics Committee (IR. SUMS.REC.1396.S197). The participants were informed about the aim and method of the study, reasons for recording the interviews, confidentiality of data, and voluntary nature of participation in this study. The data from the interviews were identified as two themes of individual factors and organizational factors. The theme of individual factors was formed to personal beliefs, the experience of hospitalization of the nurse or family members, family upbringing. Theme of the organizational factors was composed of positive role models and workload. The findings show that nurses can consider personal and organizational factors by emphasizing to the role of compassion at the moment of care. Developing the nurse s ability to compassionate care through providing organizational support and professional training is possible. In addition, recruitment of highly motivated nurses help to relieve the stress and suffering of the patient to promote compassionate care. Nurses can improve the quality of care by following a role model for positive contributors and beliefs
