چکیده مقاله:

Marine steel wire ropes are used in the most load transfer operations in marine industries like Towing Operation, Mooring, Anchoring and Deck Load Transfer. There could be many variations of wire and strand arrangements to make a wire rope and the differences in the arrangements may cause differences in working strength of the ropes. In this paper the effect of change in the wire arrangement and the number of layers on the strength of the steel wire ropes is assessed. Two different arrangement with equal sectional area and outer diameter, a two layered 1*7 wire rope and a three layered 1*19 one are modeled using CAD and CAE software. Finally the results in terms of Von Mises and normal stresses and the longitudinal strains are assessed and validated by theoretical and published experimental results. Finally it is found that generally, steel wire ropes having a great number of individual wires are used for running riggings since they provide more flexibility while ropes with fewer individual wires are used for standing riggings since they provide less elongation and greater wear-resistant
