Recent advances in electronics and wireless communications have the ability to design and manufacture sensors with low power consumption, small size, affordable prices and various applications. These small sensors have created the idea of creating and expanding networks called the WSN (Wireless Sensor Network). The use of wireless sensor networks has increased dramatically in the last decade. Sensor nodes have limitations in energy resources, processing, and computing as well as an efficient tool for data collection from the environment. In order to achieve scalability and better aggregation of data, sensor nodes are grouped into smaller groups that do not overlap. These groups, called clusters, create a hierarchical scheme in wireless sensor networks that optimize energy utilization and thus increase network lifetime. In this article, we describe a number of clustering methods that are presented for wireless sensor networks and examine some of the challenges and issues in this network, and then compare these methods.
