Appraisal, Discourse, and Ideology in Obama s Celebrating 2016 Nowrouz message

Human beings make great efforts to direct their speech and writing in a fruitful path in order to achieve and sometimes to impose their intended meaning on the audiences or readers through special genres (e.g., Nowrouz celebrating message). To accomplish their purposes they use and manipulate particular types of discourse depending on the social position they occupy. Different types of discourse might pave the language users ways to transmit their intension under the guise of words sequenced in meaningful and coherent sentences verbally as well as written forms. Discourse producers aim at using language in distinct ways to express institutional values and ideology by delimiting and defining the things that can be said and the ways that can be claimed. The present paper taking the application of appraisal system in the Obama s celebrating Nowrouz message into account makes attempt to find out the ways the orator impresses his audiences explicitly and make them accept his intended ideology peacefully. The appraisal framework put forward by Martin and Rose (2003) is applied to scrutinize the message. First, the attitudinal types and strategies were elaborated. Following graduation and its subsets, engagement was specified. Then, it was revealed that how language was used to convey ideologies in order to attain particular purposes. The purpose of the present paper is to make the audience aware of the hidden intention of the speaker and not to admit everything as a general truth.
