چکیده مقاله:

Background: Epilepsy is one of the most common chronic neurological disorders that characterized by the occurrence of unpredictable seizures. The cause of this disease in women can be result of hormonal changes. Catamenial epilepsy is a neuroendocrine status and closely associated with menstrual cycles. Some of common patterns that recognized are premenstrual, periovalatory and entire luteal phase in nonovalatory cycles. In women 31 to 60 percent of epilepsies are catamenial epilepsies. According to the high outbreak of this disease, until now there is no specific drug for this kind of epilepsy and treatment with usual drugs of epilepsy was nt enough successful. Objective: These researches were conducted with the aim of determining the role of neurosteroids in decreasing symptoms of the catamenial epilepsy.Method: This review article was conducted by searching in internal reliable database (google scholar, SID ), external reliable database ( scienced direct, pubmed ) and by using related key words. Results: The results show that changes in estrogen and progesterone has a direct effect in the pathophysiology of Catamenial epilepsy. According to the current situation endogenous neurosteroids played a major role in the development of this type of epilepsy and it is believed that the incidence of Catamenial epilepsy is associated with sudden reduction of anti-epileptic neurosteroids. During the study of various articles found that progesterone and supplements (such as Depo-medroxy progesterone and gonadotropin releasing hormone analogues) plays a large role in controlling Catamenial epilepsy. While progesterone is one of the most effective treatments in Catamenial epilepsy but is associated with complications in Endocrine glands. Accordingly, efforts continued to find a more appropriate remedy. Conclusion: In recent studies, the progesterone-like synthetic neurosteroids have few side effects were introduced. The mechanism of these drugs to control Catamenial epilepsy is increasing the performance of GABA-A receptors. So it can be said synthetic nuerosteroids along with other antiepileptic drugs typically increase the effectiveness of the treatment.
