Joint operation and coordination of TCSC and STATCOM to enhance power system security

Power system security enhancement is one of the most important issues in powersystem analysis. Executing optimal power flow, results in an optimal solution whichsatisfies power system security criteria. In optimal power flow variables are active andreactive power of generators, so by controlling them in their feasible region securitystandards should be achieved. Generation limits of each unit may be activated and preventfrom achieving security standards. On the other hand diverging active and reactive powergeneration from economic dispatch solution can impose huge charges to the systemoperator. In this regard FACTS elements can be used as controllable technologies toimprove system security characteristics. This paper investigates joint operation of TCSCand STATCOM in a coordinated manner by simulating them in the optimal power flowproblem. The problem is applied on a five bus test system with 7 power lines. Thesimulation results show the effectiveness of the coordination of two elements on thesecurity enhancement.
