چکیده مقاله:

Background: Menopause is associated with increased memory impairment. Regarding the antioxidant property of ascorbic acid (AA), the present study was designed to evaluate the ef-fects of AA on cognitive function and the level of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the brain in ovariectomized (OVX) mice.Materials and Methods: For this purpose, AA (100, 300 and 500 mg/kg/p.o.), was administrated daily in OVX mice for 30 days. Tactile learning was evaluated by novel object recogni-tion task. Also, the levels of serum BDNF were measured. Results: AA prevented from the deleterious effects of ovariec-tomy on learning memory (300 and 500 mg/kg). The serum BDNF level was also increased in OVX animals treated with AA (100 and 500 mg/kg).Conclusion: Collectively, the results of the present study sug-gest that AA might be an appropriate choice in loss or reduction of estradiol for the amelioration of cognitive impairment.
