Foreign language teaching is a difficult task. It demands, the most resourceful teaching talent in our schools and colleges if successful is to crown the effort. The foreign language teachers can boast of excellent textbooks; but it does not matter; the good teacher rises always and easily above the textbooks. In spite of all their excellence, I have found our textbooks for beginning college students fall short above all in two ways: the teaching of vocabulary andpoems. I just wonder whether our teachers in English departments can teach vocabulary and poems satisfactory andcomprehensive? For years I have tried to develop a good way of vocabulary teaching, but as yet I have not found asatisfactory one. On the other hand I am pleased with the method of some teachers teaching an understanding andan appreciation of poetry . Poems should be taught in all grades and classes of language study. But many teachersare afraid of taking up poems in class. My aim in writing this article is to stimulate teachers to handle poems in a foreign language class by possessing the proper voice, have a correct and clear pronunciation, and being able todramatize a given situation and not be afraid of acting or using gesture
