From mankind-built environment to environment-built mankind The role of environmental design of Hawraman dwelling on social interactions of inhabitants

Mankind has continually modified the nature to provide suitable conditions of life and has built environment based on cultural, social, economic and climatic conditions. What behaviorist scientists and environmental psychologists have emphasized in recent decades is that mankind and environment affect each other. Since architecture and urban design form and restrict users behavior, district density and height, urban views, congested apartments and slums influence behavioral patterns of inhabitants.This research scrutinizes Hawraman architecture and texture. Hawraman is a mountainous region located in the west of Iran, and south-east of Iraq with a unique structure and architecture. Parameters such as: stair shaped texture, mountainous geography, environment bed, constructed environments and people clothing and dialect have caused coherence and integration throughout the region.The research results show how mankind-built environments affect social behaviors of inhabitants. The context compatible architecture of Hawraman has reinforced the link between inhabitants and environment which has caused social interactions solidarity and participation in the local affairs. Their social interaction, behavior and culture are different from that of other regions, even where the same context, environment and texture are found.
