Introduction: Injections are common nursing interventions which usually cause pain. The paincaused by the injection causes anxiety, discomfort and reduced patient confidence innursingperformance. Since applying methods that enhance patients comfort is a nursing task, the aim ofthis study was to determine the effect of Emla cream and diclofenac gel on the pain caused byneedle Port placement on patients undergoing chemotherapy in oncology department. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional clinical trialstudy was conducted on 40 inpatientsof OncologyWard of Khatam-al-Anbia Hospital in Zahedan in 2017. Patients wereselectedbyconventional samplingbased on the Inclusion criteriaof the study. Patients were randomlyassigned to use Emla cream, diclofenac gel or placebo. The severity of pain wasmeasuredimmediately after injection with VAS scale. Blindness was done for pain assessor and data analyzer.SPSS22 software was used for statistical analysis. First, descriptive statistics were used todetermine the frequency, percentage, mean and then inferential statistics of paired t-test forgroup comparison. Results: The mean scores of the severity of pain in three group of Emla, diclofenac gel andplacebo were 5.49 ± 2.05 ,5.88 ± 1.93,6.71 ± 1.96,respectively.Comparison between diclofenacgel and placebo showed that the mean decrease in pain intensity in the diclofenac gel group is farmore than placebo (p > 0.0001). Comparing Emla cream and placebo, the mean reduction in painintensity in the Emla cream was far higher than placebo (p > 0.0001). Finally it said about therelationship between Emla cream and diclofenac gel, the Emla cream is more effective thandiclofenac gel in pain reduction ,although it is not statically significant. Conclusion: Although the use of Emla cream and diclofenac gel can reduce the pain in injectionsite, applying diclofenac gel is recommended due to itsavailability, cost-effectiveness anddomestic production
