چکیده مقاله:

Background: Nosocomial infections (NIs) is a serious threat to hospitalized patients, especially in high-risk wards. in the world, 8.7 % of the hospitalized patients are affected with NIs and Bacteria group are the most important microorganisms which can assign a wide range of NI to itself. In this study, we describe the most common pathogens involved in the development of NI in a different ward of the hospital. Methods: In this cross-sectional study we evaluated 517 patients with NI who were admitted in the different wards of one teaching hospital of Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences (northern Iran). The patient data (including age, sex, type of infection, type of isolated organisms and ward of the hospital) were collected and analyzed. SPSS v.16 was used for statistical calculations. Results: Out of all patients with infectious isolated cultures 57.3% were female. The highest infections in hospital wards were observed at internal medicine, neurology, and intensive care units respectively (18.4%, 17.2%, and 15.7%), but ENT, ophthalmology among the hospital wards, had the lowest infection rate (1%, 0.6%). E. coli was the most commonly observed pathogen in most of the hospital wards, but S. epidermidis was more frequent in the oncology, obstetrics and ophthalmology units. Conclusion: Given the increasing numbers of NIS in this region, it is necessary to training healthcare staff on admission to the hospital and improves the procedures of infection control in hospitals, up to maybe reducing infections spreading and mortality and health-related costs tor.
