ation of Anti-inflammatory Effect of Cinnamaldehyde Mouthwash in Comparison with Chlorhexidine in Patients with Gingivitis

Background and objective: Cinnamon s skin contains 0.5 to 2.5 percent essential oil, containing more than 50 different compounds, 80-65 percent of which are cinnamal aldehydes and the most antibacterial effect is related to cinnamic aldehyde. Antimicrobial effect of cinnamon essential oil is probably due to the presence of orthothexine cinnamaldehyde. The volatile oil contained in cinnamon has an anti-inflammatory effect. The aim of this study is to determine the effectiveness of cinnamon on gingivitis and to compare it with chlorhexidine mouthwash, when used alone, in a clinic at Mazandaran Dental School in 2017. Materails and methods: The present study is a randomized clinical trial. 105 patients were divided into 3 groups. Each group was given a mouthwash (Group 1: Cinnamaldehyde mouthwash, Group 2: Chlorhexidine mouthwash, Group 3: placebo Mouthwash) and changes in plaque index and gingival index was recorded during the study. Data entry was done in SSPS ver22 software. Findings: By comparing groups two by two, The placebo group did not show a significant difference in gingival index at the end of the first week with both chlorhexidine and cinnamaldehyde groups, But at the end of the third week, the difference between the placebo group and the other two groups was significant. Present study shows beneficial effects of cinnamaldehyde mouthwash in reducing gingival inflammation. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that the effects of cinnamaldehyde mouthwash on reducing plaque and gingival indices are similar and comparable to chlorhexidine mouthwashes. It also has not yet shown a significant side effect. This plant can be used to treat a variety of oral and dental problems. this mouthwash is a good alternative to chlorhexidine.
