Every day millions of children need to displace themselves from home to school.Although this displacement could be made through different modes (private cars,school transport, public transport, walking and cycling), the number of childrentransported in walking is increasing. Globally, pedestrians constitute 22% of allroad deaths, and in some countries this proportion is as high as twothirds.(Pedestrian safety, A road safety manual for decision-makers andpractitioners, WHO 2014). In comparison to the vehicle occupants, thepedestrians usually suffer from more serious casualties in accidents in particularschool children who have major considerations in traffic safety issues. Despitethis fact that schools should be located in safe places to prevent childrenfatalities, in this research work, a method has been developed to determine thelevel of risk for schools in the vicinity of rural roads. After making an extensiveresearch and exploring school-zones, a risk level determination method has beendeveloped based on Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). In the next step, theproposed methodology used to identify and prioritize rural schools consideringeffective factors that influence on road safety in particular in developingcountries.
