The communication addresses two specific issues: (1) A refined representation of space in two respects: first, to disaggregate trip-ends within a travel zone, and second, to identify the points of articulation between simple transportation modes (e.g., transit stations) within an intermodal travel chain. (2) The topological, behavioral and econometric structure of the mode choice set for a traveler in a given travel situation. A three-leg structure is proposed to distinguish three stages in a trip: first an access leg from the origin, then a main leg and finally an egress leg to the destination. At each access/egress stage individual modes are available (e.g., Walk) as well as the Bus if there is a bus station, close enough to the trip-end. At the main stage, mid-range and long-range travel modes are considered including the Auto mode and simple or composite transit modes. An exhaustive path enumeration scheme is proposed for the Paris Area to search all possible shortest transit paths between any given pair of points. A street-level precision network is used to locate disaggregate trip-ends and to represent local street networks. It is combined with a transit network providing station-to-station travel characteristics of the shortest transit path. Based on the enumeration scheme multinomial logit models of mode choice are estimated on the basis of the 2001 Paris Household Travel Survey and used for disaggregate analysis of the travel behaviour of commuters.
