Temporary Public Spaces as a New Form of Innovative Urban Management

Contemporary cities have to face many new challenges, which result from increasing inhabitants needs. In terms of public spaces, these needs should be considered by passive choices: how this space should look like and which function should it fulfill , but it also needs to be applied to proactive choices.Therefore, many cities develop the temporary uses of public space which can be legal or illegal (and quasi-legal as well). Temporariness could be a way to implement permanent solutions or to be an answer to current needs.This article is an attempt to assess examples of temporary solutions in public spaces as a new kind of place management. Moreover, the article tries to give an answer to a question: what possibilities are for the application of the idea of temporariness In this paper, the temporary public spaces are analyzed on various spatial scales. The main aim of the study is to focus on different forms of temporary space arrangement. How temporary solutions can contribute to improve quality of that space and what are their limitations How these arrangements can improve social interactions, activities and how they can impact on inhabitants’ quality of life These analyses have been summarized in the model of place management by using temporary solutions in public spaces.
