The Effect of Balance Exercise Training on Balance Status, and Quality of Life in Elderly Women: Randomize Clinical trial

Background: Preventing falls in the elderly is one of the major challenges in public health. Past research has focused on dizziness in old age. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of educational intervention on performing equestrian exercises, vestibular system and quality of life in elderly people in Shiraz Methods: This is a semi-experimental pre-test and post-test study in 60 elderly women with a history of fall in the last 6 to 12 months. The elderly were selected by objective sampling method and then randomly assigned to experimental groups (n = 30) and control (n = 30). The study outcomes were measured using BBS, Romberg, DHI, LEIPAD and VNG assays before and two months after the intervention. The intervention include Cawthorne-cooksey and strengthening the sensory-motor system was conducted in the experimental group. Data were analyzed by SPSS software version 25 and significant values were set at 0.05. The inform consent form that was designed and approved by ethics committee of SUMS (by registration number 1396.142) and registered at Iranian Registry of Clinical Trial (IRCT.ir) with number 33024. Results: The mean age of participants was 65.75 ± 4.061 years, the most common place of fall bath and the most common injury related to the fall, skin injury. 97% of the subjects in the experimental group reported normal Romberg test after intervention. No crash in the experimental group was reported 2 months after the intervention. Significant improvements wereobserved in the mean scores of FES-I BBS, Romberg, DHI, as well as some dimensions of quality of life in this group(P<0.001) Conclusion:The results of this study provide useful implications for the development ofequilibrium exercises in the elderly and also research to assess the long-term consequences ofsuch interventions in the elderly
